Some trivia about the Three Musketeers.
The Three Musketeers was written by Alexandre Dumas and released in 1844. Although the musketeers in Dumas’ novel seemed fictionalized, they were actually based on real people and historical facts. As the novel describes, there was King Louis XIII, Cardinal Richelieu and Anne of Austria.
Even the characters themselves were based on real individuals. D’Artagnan, who was the hero, was in real life Charles de Batz-Castlemore. Athos, Aramis and Porthos were also designed after real-life Musketeers. Porthos was in real life Isaac de Portau, and served in the King’s Guards until 1643, and served in the Musketeers with d’Artagnan, or Castlemore in real life.
Aramis’ character was based on the life of Henry d’Aramitz, and he was related to the same Monsieur de Treville that is mentioned in the novel as well. Athos’ character was based on the life of Armand de Sillegue, Seigner d’Athos et d’Auteville (now that’s a mouthful for a name) and too was related to Treville.
Whatever costume you choose for Halloween or your Costume Party, it’s always fun to know that the clothing you’re wearing has some basis in real life clothing from centuries ago.
